Ryan Place: The Perfect Neighborhood
Located just south of downtown Fort Worth is Ryan Place, which blends history, livability, and friendliness like no other neighborhood you'll find in Fort Worth. Inspired by developer John Ryan, the neighborhood projects the historic charm and grandeur of his vision in 1911.
The History of Ryan Place
John Ryan looked out over a stretch of grassland in 1911 and envisioned a neighborhood that would rival the Victorian mansions along the Trinity River and Summit and Pennsylvania avenues.
By 1926, just fifteen years later, John Ryan's vision was realized, and many of Fort Worth's most prominent families lived in the landscaped mansions. These elegant homes ranged from Mediterranean stucco and stone to Georgian Brick.
The Great Depression descended upon America, and like all other neighborhoods, Ryan Place was ravaged. Many of the mansions became empty and deteriorated. Construction came to a halt and didn't regain momentum until after World War II.
By the early 1960s, Ryan Place suffered from neglect, and migration to Fort Worth's new suburbs left many homes in a state of disrepair. In 1969, the Ryan Place Improvement Association was formed, and the neighborhood began to return to John Ryan's early vision.
In 1979, Elizabeth Boulevard joined the National Register of Historic Places, making Ryan Place the only residential historic district in Fort Worth. Shortly after, the iconic gates at Elizabeth Boulevard and Eighth Avenue have been restored, and neighborhood homes show the pride and dedication of Ryan Place residents.
