History of Shady Oaks
Shady Oaks Country Club’s founder is Mr. Marvin Leonard. He was known as “The Texas Merchant” and was one of Fort Worth’s best-known businessmen. Heeding the advice of his doctor to get out of the office and enjoy the fresh air of the great outdoors, Mr. Leonard picked up some golf clubs, and his love of the game began.
During his rounds of golf at Glen Garden Country Club, Mr. Leonard met a young caddy by the name of Ben Hogan, who later became one of the most famous golfers of all time. They began a lifelong friendship.
In 1934, Mr. Leonard purchased 157 acres on the southwest side of Fort Worth and began to build what would become one of the best-known golf courses in the United States: The Colonial Golf Club. The club officially opened in January 1936. The club would go on to host the Colonial National Invitational golf tournament for many years, in which golf’s top players competed. He sold the club in 1942 to its members.
With the success of Colonial, Mr. Leonard became restless to build a new country club. His goal was to build a club with one of the finest golf courses in the world. In 1955 he found 1,220 acres of farmland in the Westover Hills residential area. Shady Oaks Country Club was soon to be built.
Mr. Leonard succeeded in building a magnificent country club and golf course, designed by Robert Trent Jones. Today, Shady Oaks is one of the most exceptional membership courses in the country. With back tees added in, it could easily be converted into a first-class tournament course.
